Ardour Infra Red Control allows you to control the Ardour DAW with an infra-red remote control unit such as the remote supplied with a TV interface. The full range of Ardour OSC commands are supported: pause, play, loop, record arm, and so on. When you're tracking, you can set up across the room and start recording with the press of a button. When you're mixing, you can wander about to get a different perspective or sit back in a comfy sofa away from the computer.
First you'll need to install layman. See Gentoo Overlays User Guide.
Note that in future when you "emerge --sync" you should also "layman -S" to update your layman overlays.
Next, add the layman portage overlay called "underlay":
$ layman -a underlay
You need to edit package.keywords so that portage can install Ardour Infra Red Control. For example, for x86:
$ echo "media-sound/ardour-irc ~x86" >> /etc/portage/package.keywords
Now emerge ardour-irc:
$ emerge -av ardour-irc
If you don't have it already, LIRC will be installed when you emerge ardour-irc. See the gentoo wike lirc guide for more information. You'll need to get this working with your hardware before going any farther.
Next you'll need to configure the file /etc/ardour-irc/lirc.conf. This is where you map remote control buttons to Ardour OSC commands. Instructions are in the file. Ardour OSC support is explained here.
Finally, don't forget that OSC is not enabled by default in Ardour. You'll need to activate it in menu: Options/Misc Options.
Download the latest ardour-irc from http://www.aperiplus.co.uk/downloads/src/. Src tarballs are called "ardour-irc-[version].tar.bz2". Full instructions are in the file: "install.txt".
You now have the power of remote control. Please use it wisely in a responsible, safe manner.
